I have deep roots in Texas – most of my extended family, my mom, dad, and their parents are from different parts of the state. Many of my memories of growing up was to visit my grandparents, and great aunt and uncle here.
My first experience learning about assisted living was visiting my grandmother, who lived out her last years in a large facility. I remember that it looked more like a resort hotel than a ‘care environment.’ Seniors were always surrounded by peers, and it seems like there was plenty of activities keeping everyone busy. I remember thinking that where she lived is much better than the alternative of living alone, at home.
She had made a solid network of friends, and we felt good because we knew she was cared for, and looked after daily.
I call upon those memories when people e-mail us to ask about assisted living, and how it can help them, or a family member. Getting into the right facility – and one with a solid reputation is key, to me (not all facilities are created, or managed equally). That’s been my motivation, working on Assisted Living Directory, to teach our users ways to research facility inspections & complaints, health and safety records, and also resident testimonials.
