What is dementia? This is basically a significant impairment in thinking and memory. There is a stereotype in nursing home and assisted living culture that most or all of the residents are "demented" - or suffering from a mental impairment. This is simply not correct. In fact, only a little more than half of nursing home or assisted residents have dementia, and most of these residents are lucid and carry on their complex lives of managing their finances, schedules, and routines as they always have.

- A personal note about the Denver area: I (the editor/founder) of Assisted Living Directory have lived in the Denver area for over a decade. Denver is wonderful in many ways. The weather, perhaps different than the common perception maybe, is terrific. Denver boasts over 300 days of beautiful sunshine per year, and there is actually not a whole lot of snow or inclement weather that comes our way. Most of the snow stays in the mountains, and what we do get melts away fairly quickly.

Seniors that live in Denver are a lucky bunch. It seems like every week I drive by a new, and beautiful assisted living facility around town. Many new ones are being built all of the time!

I've recently had the opportunity to visit some of the assisted living facilities in the Denver area, and one of the things I am working on is doing video interviews with the facility administrators. I plan on asking these folks questions about their experiences in the assisted living field, perhaps to help all of those folks that are interested in entering the field of long-term care. I have numerous visitors to my site comment on my "how to" page with questions about how to open an assisted living facility, and what they might expect working in this industry. Having local experts weigh in on their experiences about the rewards and challenges of operating an assisted living home would be, I think, extremely valuable information to add to my site.
