Parkinson's Disease and Assisted Living Information

Assisted Living Directory is in the unique position to be able to write about Aurora Colorado with some degree of personal knowledge and experience (since we are based in Broomfield, which is one of Aurora's neighbors to the West). We are in the Aurora area often, and we marvel at how fast it is growing. Every time we visit Aurora, it seems as if we spot a different assisted living facility!

Aurora is strategically well-located too, since it borders Denver, and all of the great amenities, healthcare and services offered in the big city, and it is also very close to Denver International Airport.

Aurora, as we have mentioned, is huge - by both land standards as well as population standards. Aurora crosses over three different counties - Douglas, Adams and Arapahoe counties can all claim parts of the City of Aurora. Aurora also has the 3rd highest number of residents in Colorado, with around 323,348 people claiming Aurora as their home.

As we mentioned above, there is a good-sized senior population in Aurora. Currently there are over 27,000 seniors living in Aurora (which should top 30,000 in the next few years), which, although it is not as high as our national average, is still a formidable number.

Thankfully, Aurora offers a good range of choices when it comes to assisted living and long term care.

Arapahoe County and the State of Colorado have numerous programs and services available to help assist seniors in Aurora and elsewhere in the state. Specifically for Aurora and Arapahoe County, you can learn about what senior services are offered here:

Some of the programs offered are:

1) Adult Protective Services: This is an important program for any city or county to offer. Adult Protective Services exists to protect those who may be susceptible to abuse, mistreatment, or self-neglect (seniors who are unable to care for themselves, or acquire services that are essential to their own health and well being). Adult Protective Services will also investigate any report of neglect, abuse or exploitation. They can also provide counseling, assessment, and referrals to service providers, if needed.

2) Meals on Wheels: This is a common, yet essential program that one might find in most areas (sometimes they are offered or coordinated through local Agencies on Aging, or senior centers). Arapahoe County supports Meals on Wheels which exists to provide healthy, home-delivered meals to seniors who qualify based on income. To learn more about the Meals on Wheels program, call 303-798-7642

3) Transportation: Arapahoe County offers a Senior Transportation program to help seniors to live independently by offering transportation to and from medical appointments, shopping, or senior centers. To find out more, please call To learn more, call 303-798-
7642.

4) Another excellent program offered in Aurora through Arapahoe county is called "Project Lifesaver." This wonderful and potentially life-saving program, radio transmission devices are used to help local police and law enforcement to find people with Alzheimer's, dementia, or other memory disorders who may be lost, or who have wandered away from home or an assisted living facility. To find out more about this program call 720-874-4165.

These are only a few of the many programs offered to Aurora residents by the State of Colorado and Arapahoe county.
