Here's what we have learned about the "senior scene" in Worcester..

The city of Worcester has over 20,000 residents who can be considered seniors - so we were happy to see that the City provides some useful services to this population.

For starters, the Worcester Senior Center provides a "welcoming place" for all seniors, families, and their caregivers. The center has a strong emphasis on health and wellness, with programs to help promote this emphasis. There are a number of fitness classes, support groups as well as multicultural programs at the center.

We were also very excited to learn that the Senior Center offers computing classes to seniors. There are courses for basic computer skills, digital imaging, word processing, e-mail and much more! We also learned that the City of Worcester a Division of Elder Affairs (which is reassuring, since not all cities of Worcester's size have such a service). The Division of Elder Affairs offers a continuum of direct services to elders - many in conjunction with the Senior Center - and is staffed by senior aides, interns, volunteers, and a small paid staff. A monthly newsletter is offered which outlines classes that seniors can participate in, health tips, and even offers coupons and discounts to local businesses and services.

The City of Worcester has a nice handful of assisted living facilities, as well as Alzheimer's and Dementia care. We've tried to include most of what we were able to find on this page. It is estimated that within the next 10 years, the number of seniors living in Worcester will close to double, so we can expect the number of long term care facilities in Worcester to grow as well!

A pivotal agency that serves Worcester is the "Elder Services of Worcester Area, Inc." which acts to take some of the 'bewilderment' out of the wide network of statewide and local senior services, by providing specialists who are able to answer questions about elder care, or to refer families and seniors to solutions that meet, and solve the issues or questions that are facing them. There is no charge for the service of using this agency, and they may be contacted by sending them an inquiry or question here. ESWA also provides respite care for caregivers - which acts to provide temporary relief to caregivers who are looking after the needs of an elderly family member or friend.

The City of Worcester also offers it's own array of senior services through it's Elder Affairs office. Whether you are living alone, or perhaps in an assisted living facility, residents age 60 and over have access to a multitude of direct services, many of which are available through the Worcester Senior Center.
