Stubborn Seniors - When Does It Become Unfair To Family Caregivers?

Assisted Living Tidbits:

The City of Wichita has a unique view of what they consider to be a 'senior service.' According to the city's website, "almost everything the City does is a Senior Citizen program." Their stance is that City Services 'touch the life of virtually every citizen in Wichita' - so everything from Police, libraries, water, utilities, roads, and everything in between are part of everyone's lives, including seniors.

They have a good point.

Additionally, the City goes further for seniors - offering more programs and services specifically geared towards the 65 and older population in Wichita.

Firstly, the City has a number of senior centers, and the City of Wichita has "contributed nearly $1,000,000 for the acquisition and renovation of the Senior Services, Inc. facility (200 S. Walnut, 267-0302)." The City of Wichita has taken a very active role in the livelihood of the City's senior centers, and has also funded a portion of the construction of several other senior centers in town.

The City also has Golden Age Clubs that are geared towards seniors, offering dances, dinners, and at times, trips. The cost is only $2 per person per year. These are based in the City's numerous recreation centers.

The City of Wichita also offers numerous discounts to it's seniors at many local attractions and also at many other facilities in town.

There are other programs available to seniors which include Blood Pressure Screenings, an Emergency Response System, seminars offered by the local police department, curb-to-curb paratransit services for qualified seniors, and many more.

Lastly, seniors in Wichita are also assisted by the Sedgwick County Department on Aging - which advocates to preserve the independence of seniors, and to help improve the quality of life for Wichita's elderly population.

All of these local services and programs can almost be considered an amenity, or perhaps an extended service of Wichita's assisted living facilities and homes. Seniors living in these assisted living environments have easy and ready access to most all of these services - and most facilities offer transportation to and from the local senior centers, where many of these items are offered. If not, the City's transportation programs may be utilized.

Assisted Living Directory iconThis page was designed to help you with your research into senior care and assisted living options in Wichita by offering trusted and accurate information.

The City of Wichita is currently estimated to have over 382,368 (at last count). Of this population, 11.5% are considered 'seniors' or over the age of 65. This percentage is lower than both the national average of 13%, as well as the state of Kansas average of 13.2% (Source: U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts for Wichita). Nonetheless, the senior population in Wichita will certainly grow in the years to come, and the demand and need for long-term care facilities and options will also increase.

Seniors in Wichita and Sedgwick County are fortunate to have access to the wonderful and diverse menu of services, assistance, and programs offered through the Sedgewick County Department on Aging. 'The Department on Aging is responsible for planning and coordinating a comprehensive service delivery system to meet the needs of seniors in the tri-county area.' Although all seniors are serviced through this department, whether they live alone, or in a facility-environment, 'Special emphasis is given to the needs of low income, minority, and disabled seniors to prevent costly institutionalization.' Services provided by the department may include education, transportation services, in-home services, case management, and more.

Further trusted information and professional assistance can also be found through the Central Plains Area Agency on Aging, which, aside from a wide-variety of support services and programs, offers a fairly comprehensive list of assisted living and housing options in Sedgwick County, which is available in a downloadable, and printable .pdf format.
