Overland Park, a city in it's own right, is sometimes considered a suburb of Kansas City. However, with a population approaching 180,000, we think it stands on it's own!

Overland Park is to the south of it's larger neighbor, and the city provides a number of services (mostly through it's community centers, from what we could find) for it's local senior population. In addition, there are a good number of assisted living and Alzheimer's care facilities located in Overland Park.

Most of the "senior services" provided by the city seem to be bundled into the local community centers. After a visit to the Overland Park city website, we found information on 2 community centers - the Matt Ross and Tomahawk Ridge community centers. Each has programs for individuals and families, many of which would be suitable for any senior to enjoy.

Unlike most city websites we look at, there wasn't much specifically that we found geared towards seniors - and no page or section that was dedicated to Overland Park's aging population. I used the search function on the site, and was not able to find much. It would be great to see a dedicated seniors or aging area in the future.

Interesting questions we have received about assisted living issues and topics:

I am looking for a place in Overland Park or the surrounding area for my mother who will be on Medicaid and has early stage Alzheimer's. Would this be a proper place to start or is this only private pay? I also want to find out what types of payment do you accept for your facility, and what the staff-to-resident ratio might be.

A small community, Cypress Court at Overland Park is divided into four separate houses all within the same building. Country Lane, Garden Path, Boathouse Cove and Cottage Place each have its own indoor porch and front door. The houses are built around a center that includes the art studio, community room, beauty shop and health center.

Each house has its own dining room, allowing for fewer distractions and providing the resident with a peaceful dining experience. In addition, Cypress Court's resident apartments are designed specifically for memory care. The small apartments lessen confusion and provide an environment that reduces the risk of falls.

Some residents thrive in the security and familiarity that the individual houses offer. Others are on the move, looking for the next adventure. For these residents, it's as simply as opening the doors to their houses and walking into the large interior courtyard. Here they can meet up with friends, search for the resident cats, go into another house to visit, or just sit in the sun on one of the indoor porches. On nice days, residents can go outside and walk the pathways, or they may chose to sit on the patio or in the gazebo just to enjoy the fresh air.

Whether it's inside or outside, Cypress Court is designed for the memory impaired. It is far more than a place to live. It's Home.
