Assisted Living Tidbits

There is a lovely photo on the City of Norman's senior center/services site that features several seniors doing various activities, such as dominoes and other games, and the caption says "Caution - Grandparents at Play."

This brings up an important point. Everyone, including (and in some ways especially) seniors need to have outlets for fun and recreation. Senior centers are usually terrific places for seniors to go to forget about their "daily grind," or perhaps health conditions for a while and to simply act like a kid. There are many benefits to play - lowering stress, building your brain, helping with Alzheimer's (games have been shown to help people with Alzheimer's, and it has been suggested that play and games that use the brain can even slow the progression..).

If you are considering assisted living for yourself or a loved one - we suggest that you ask the facility if they have an activities coordinator, or scheduled recreational activities, such as a movie night, or perhaps bingo - or even group exercise classes. Aside from the obvious health and well-being benefits - having activities that keep residents active and socially plugged-in will help to offset any boredom, loneliness, or isolation that can be common with seniors living in a long-term care environment.
