Assisted Living Tidbits:

The City of Shawnee's website has some very good information for it's senior citizens on a variety of important subjects.

We found a great page about carbon monoxide poisoning that details the dangers, and who is at risk. It says "Everyone is at risk for carbon monoxide poisoning, but infants, children, senior citizens and people with carbon monoxide coronary or respiratory problems stand the greatest risk."

The page goes on to explain where carbon monoxide comes from, and how to protect yourself. In addition, there are a number of great tips on what do do, and what not to do (basically, how to protect yourself, and live in a carbon monoxide free home).

This can't be truer for assisted living facilities. One question you may want to ask the facility (yes, we know it may sound nitpicky), is if each room in the facility or residence has a carbon monoxide detector. Many individual rooms in a facility may have separate heating systems, or range burners that put off the dangerous gases. In addition, if Alzheimer's residents are present, will those detectors be checked periodically to make sure the batteries are good, and that the detector is working?
