Assisted Living Tidbits:

I was very impressed by the sheer number of assisted living facilities in Lubbock. Although there are a handful of large facilities, we found many that had less than 20 beds - most likely smaller, residential homes.

The City of Lubbock has a superb support network for it's local senior population. The Parks and Recreation department operates and manages 5 senior centers located in different parts of the city. What a great opportunity to be able to socialize, participate in a class, learn how to use a computer, or enjoy the company of other local seniors.

In addition, there are a few very popular programs and services. The Senior Lunch Program offers a hot lunch to seniors, and generally is M-F at 12pm (Homestead is the exception, which is, as of this writing, at 11:30). Any guest under 60 years old will need to pay $5. Not bad for a full lunch!

Also, the City of Lubbock has a good transportation program that offers a ride to and from the senior centers. You can call (806) 767-2710 for information and to be placed on a route, and more than likely, many of the assisted living facilities in Lubbock are already on the list. The transportation program runs Monday through Friday, and includes all centers.

I am looking for an assisted living facility for my 91 year old mother. She is mentally fine, but physically needs some assistance. She is presently at Carillon House completing her rehab from a fractured pelvis. She will qualify for Medicaid when she spends down her checking account.
