Assisted Living Tidbits The importance of Adult Day Health Care Centers: One of the things that has become unfortunately, and alarmingly obvious to us over the years is how many people simply cannot afford to place their aging parents or loved one into a good, and appropriate assisted living or long-term care facility. Many people mistakenly assume that their insurance, or the government will pay for most of, if not all of the cost of assisted living. Unfortunately, this is often times not the case, and when mom or dad starts showing signs of dementia or Alzheimer's, and needs supervised housing immediately, families can be caught off-guard as to how much assisted living costs, and the possible reality that they will not be able to afford it. Many families in this situation are 'sandwiched' between raising children of their own, and then suddenly having to care for a frail or elderly parent. This can be an enormous burden on anyone, no matter how much support they may have from friends or family members. We've also learned that many people are simply unaware of the many programs and services available to them in their community to help them through the challenging caregiving process. One of the most important, and fairly common program (and lifesaver) that most cities and communities of decent size have is an 'Adult Day Care" or "Adult Day Health Care Center/Program." What is an Adult Day Care Center? It's essentially a 'safe place" that provides care and companionship for seniors who need supervision or assistance during the day. This program is designed to help offer relief to family members to allow them to rest, work, and take time off from the many duties that come with caring for an elderly parent or senior. We also found a terrific page on the State of California's website that lists adult day care centers by county. The center that serves the Beverly Hills area is: Robertson Adult Day Health Care Center Costs can vary between different centers, and different states and areas. Cost can range from $25.00 per day to over $100 - all depending on the care and services offered. Financial assistance may be available through Medicaid, the Older American's Act, or the VA (Veteran's Administration). You'll need to contact your local Adult Day Care Center to find out details.
