Assisted Living Tidbits:

Unfortunately, the City of Bakersfield does not have much in the way of senior services or information easily findable on it's city website. We did go to the City of Bakersfield site, and used their search function to try to find anything related to 'aging' or 'seniors' or 'assisted living' and, as of the time of this writing, we found very little.

We did, however, find a little information about the local senior center in Bakersfield It is located at 530 4th Street in Bakersfield, about a block from Lowell Park, just off of Union Avenue. We found information on several other senior & community centers for Bakersfield, and we have listed those on the main content portion of this page.

Where we did find a good deal of information about aging and senior services for Bakersfield was on the County of Kern website. The one thing we did notice is that the site appears to not be updated as frequently as would be optimal - as there is information that is outdated about events from last year (like the Senior Day at Kern County Fair, and Healthy Harvest - both events from last September and October, at the time of this writing). Nevertheless, there are sections for some of the important services offered by, and within Kern County. Some of the services you will find are:

1) Information about the Adult Protective Services program in Kern County, which exists to investigate any possible incidents of abuse or neglect of seniors in Bakersfield, or Kern County. However, they will not investigate incidents that occur in Long Term Care Settings. This duty is set aside for the Long Term Care Ombudsman, which we will talk about next. **The Long Term Care Ombudsman program generally refers to a program run by state-certified volunteers to act as a voice for, and to advocate for seniors and elderly residents living in a long-term care environment, assisted living or nursing facility. The Ombudsman will help to ensure residents' rights in accordance to State and Federal Laws. In addition, duties are to educate caregivers, health providers and practitioners, and much more. 2) Senior Nutrition - a program that provides meals to seniors within Kern County, as well as "meals on wheels" or home-delivered meals to seniors who are homebound.

3) In Home Support Services - is another service that allows seniors to stay at home, while receiving assistance with daily tasks, groceries, personal hygiene, and doctor's appointments. (661) 868-1000

4) Kern County will also help it's local senior population with any Medicare issues or problems with health insurance. This program is called "HICAP" which stands for the Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program.

Lastly, we'd like to mention the California Assisted Living Association as a good place to find out information about assisted living in Bakersfield, or anywhere else in California or Kern County. The CALA provides excellent information about assisted living, senior housing definitions, and a good consumer checklist that offers tips, suggestions, and other considerations to think about when you are researching and assessing different assisted communities or facilities. They discuss several points about atmosphere and environment, physical features, and good questions to ask yourself, and the facility about relevant costs, monthly fees, contracts, billing and insurance.
