One of the things that we believe can be extremely beneficial for seniors (or anyone for that matter), is volunteering.

Seniors who are able can benefit from volunteering as it provides a means to stay plugged-in socially, mentally, and perhaps even spiritually. Some seniors become more isolated and lonely as they head into retirement years - often times as a result of not having their children in the same city, and possibly due to not having a spouse or significant other.

Volunteering provide a new sense of meaning and purpose, and can help to serve many needs that are inherent to any city or area. We've learned about seniors volunteering to help young children learn to read, or helping as tutors with classwork. Seniors who are in good health and independence can also volunteer at retirement communities or assisted living facilities to help their fellow seniors who may not be as able to do the things they used to, or to simply provide friendship and social support.

Most larger cities have agencies or services that can help to coordinate volunteers where they are needed. We found a nice website and agency in Tulsa that does exactly that - the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, which "...serves as a one-stop clearinghouse to connect volunteers to meaningful community service."
