North Dakota is currently estimated to have 683,932 residents, and due to the current regional economic 'boom' - this number will steadily grow in the near future. 14.4% of North Dakotans are 65 or over, making them seniors in the eyes of the US Census. This is higher than the US average of 13.3% (Source: U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts for North Dakota) .

North Dakota is a land of contrasts, which can present challenges to it's aging population. Although there are a handful of larger cities in North Dakota, including Fargo, Bismarck, and Grand Forks, most of this northern state consists of farmland and rural counties. Few, if any senior services or assisted living facilities may exist in these areas - forcing seniors who need care in these areas to look elsewhere. If seniors decide to stay put, the caregiving duties often fall on family members.

We are fortunate in America, and in North Dakota that we are served by state and federal agencies and programs to assist seniors and caregivers, whether they are rural or urban, and if they live at home, or perhaps in a long-term care environment. The North Dakota Department of Human Services' Adults and Aging Services department is a great first-stop to find many of the programs and services available statewide. In addition, there is a page specifically for Assisted Living Services, which includes how North Dakota Defines an assisted living facility (each state's definition is generally unique). Within this definition, it is important to note that "An entity may not keep, operate, conduct, manage, or maintain an assisted living facility or use the term "assisted living" in its advertising unless it is licensed by the department."
