Assisted Living Tidbits

Important things to think about when moving into an assisted living facility: Does the facility have a generator backup in case of an electrical outage? You might not have considered this but imagine, especially if your health depends on medical machinery that uses electricity - a storm knocks the power out in your neighborhood for several hours. Immediately, the power is back on because your facility has generator backups for just such an emergency. You'll be patting yourself on the back because you researched this before you moved in!

Did you know? The United States General Accounting Office estimates that the costs for nursing homes will triple over the course of the next 20 years. Right now the average yearly cost of nursing home care is over $60,000 (2002 estimate). For exclusive facilities, that number is over $100,000. Both of these numbers are higher for larger cities

"Windsor Gardens residents... recently hosted a social hour in celebration of Gov. Ernie Fletcher's proclamation declaring Sept. 10-16 as Kentucky Assisted Living Week. Fletcher said he "urges all citizens of the commonwealth to visit assisted living communities in Kentucky to learn how senior adults can benefit from a nurturing, homelike environment with choice, security and a true quality of life." Windsor Gardens is located in Campbellsville, Bardstown, Georgetown and Mt. Washington." This from www.cknj.com.

The State of Kentucky is home to approximately 4,314,113 residents. Of this population, it is estimated that there are 549,133 residents who are 'seniors' over the age of 65. This number represents 13.0 % of the population of Kentucky, which is just slightly higher than the national average of 12.6.%.

The number of seniors in Kentucky will most certainly continue to grow over the coming years - as will the need for assisted living and long term care options.

As with most states, Kentucky has a very specific definition of what assisted living is, including eligibility requirements, and the types of services provided by assisted living facilities. In addition, assisted living communities must be certified yearly by the Kentucky Department for Aging and Independent Living.

Services provided by assisted living facilities include: Help with personal daily living activities such as bathing, dressing, grooming and hygiene, transferring, toileting and eating; help with self-administering medication; scheduled social activities; and assistance with a number of household and "related activities incidental to daily life."

To see the full definition for Assisted Living Communities, please visit the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services site here. It should be noted that the terms “assisted living communities” and “assisted living facilities” should be considered synonymous.

This page should serve as a starting point for learning about many of the different assisted living facilities and long term care options throughout the State of Kentucky.

We have been in business for over 10 years. We are a personal care home. This means we provide a level of care above assisted living in terms of care and we provide round-the-clock licensed and certified nursing staff. We also administer medications for our residents. However, we are not a skilled nursing home in that you much be ambulatory to be a resident. We also do not accept patients with catheters, feeding tubes, etc.

We offer 3 meals and 3 snacks daily (we can accommodate any special dietary need), transportation to appointments, and stimulating activities. We also provide occupational, speech, and physical therapy if needed.

We are a secure environment and all guests must use an access code to enter the facility.
