The State of Indiana requires an assisted living community to register as a Housing with Services Establishment (HSE) which requires disclosure of the kinds of services available and / or provided to the residents. Depending on the provision of services, assisted living communities may choose to become licensed by the Indiana State Department of Health as a type of health facility known as a Residential Care Facility.

Did you know? The United States General Accounting Office estimates that the costs for nursing homes will triple over the course of the next 20 years. Right now the average yearly cost of nursing home care is over $60,000 (2002 estimate). For exclusive facilities, that number is over $100,000. Both of these numbers are higher for larger cities

Senior citizens deserve the right to stay healthy, active and independent. The Indiana Family and Social Services Administration provides services to help seniors remain in their homes and communities as long as possible instead of institutions, and to help older Hoosiers remain healthy and safe.

Does the assisted living residence offer a laundry service? This is another example of something that should not be assumed. If the service is offered, is there an extra charge incurred? Do the individual units have a washer and dryer? The key is to ask the facility a lot of questions instead of assuming

The State of Indiana is home to approximately 6,423,113 residents. Of this population, it is estimated that there are 796,850 residents who are 'seniors' over the age of 65. This number represents 12.6% of the population of Indiana, which equals the national average of 12.6.%.

The number of seniors in Indiana will most certainly continue to grow over the coming years - as will the need for assisted living and long term care options.

As with most states, the State of Indiana has it's own definition of what 'assisted living' is, who is eligible, and what services are to be provided. The State of Indiana requires an assisted living community to register as a Housing with Services Establishment (HSE) which requires disclosure of the kinds of services available and / or provided to the residents. We were able to find a good description of assisted living on The Indiana Elder Affairs Network "Options" site. "Options" was created through Indiana Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA) division of aging to "promote and support a broad range of long-term care community options for older Hoosiers", which includes Assisted Living.
