Assisted Living Tidbits:

News Items - We were reading about an assisted-living facility that is to offer care for Alzheimer's and Diabetes in Danbury, CT. The THE NEWS-TIMES reports that "Maplewood is the former Heritage Heights nursing home" and talks about the rooms being more like a room in your home, not in a hotel.

What is assisted living? Assisted living (also called board and care, adult living, supported care) bridge the gap between living independently and living in a nursing home. Assisted living typically offers a combination of housing and meals, and supportive and health care services. The federal government does not regulate assisted living, and definitions of assisted living vary from state to state. (from alz.org)

Make sure to ask about extra fees up front. Assisted-living centers charge many additional fees, and it's good practice for people to be familiar with them and plan for them up-front, so they don't come as a surprise with that first bill. For example: Will you be charged for hairdressing, apartment cleaning, or extra care? How about transportation or rehabilitation costs?

Home Instead Senior Care (An alternative to assisted living)
The Home Instead Senior Care network of locally-owned offices was developed with a passionate desire to be your trusted source for helping to keep your aging mother, father, grandparent or friend safe in their home as they grow older.

And because home care services must come from someone you trust locally, Home Instead Senior Care of greater New Haven County is passionate about exceeding the needs of the elderly in our community. We're not a giant corporation, we're a community-based, friendly and responsive team with offices right in downtown Milford and downtown Cheshire.

Today, many relationships are formed daily through CAREGivers who provide home care help to clients and their families who desire assistance with activities that used to be simple. Tasks like grabbing a can of soup from the top shelf, opening the mail, reading a book, folding laundry, tying shoelaces or scrapbooking family history are not as easy as they used to be for many seniors.

No matter where seniors live: in their homes, in assisted living facilities or even in nursing homes, Home Instead Senior Care is currently providing thousands of hours of senior home care services annually in the greater New Haven, Connecticut, area.

These senior home care services may include assistance with trips to the doctor, reminders to take the right medication at the right time, meal preparation, light housekeeping, errands, shopping and even Alzheimer's care. The result is companionship which allows seniors to feel safe and independent.
