  • When an elderly adult is starting to have trouble living alone, it is usually due to one of three reasons. 1) Injury: A broken hip 2) Illness: diabetes can cause a variety of problems that might cause someone to not be able to care for themselves without assistance. 3) Cognitive decline: Of course the big one is Alzheimer's disease. Any disease that compromises one's ability to remember or causes problems with perfoming daily tasks or routines makes that person a good candidate for assisted living or long-term care.

  • Are you a Tech Savvy Senior?

    It is no secret that many seniors are simply intimidated by computers, emailing, and the internet. It seems as if this technology appeared out of nowhere, and is constantly changing. However, there are plenty of seniors out there who have taken the plunge into the dark waters of the technology age to find out that is isn't as hard as they thought it would be, and it is also a lot of fun! You can communicate with your grandchildren via e-mail, share photos, find a restaurant or a doctor, and manage your finances all from the comfort of your own home. And if home is at an assisted living facility or care center, ask to see if there is an internet connection and computer that is available to the residents. You also may wish to inquire about classes or instruction. Many facilities offer classes or workshops on how to use a computer and surf the internet!

  • Did you know? Experts believe that as many as 4.5 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer's. The disease usually begins after the age of 60, and risk goes up with age. While younger people also may get AD, it is much less common.

  • If you have any questions about what is covered by Medicare, please contact them by calling 1-800-633-4227. Medication management is also offered by many residences.

  • What is Long-Term-care insurance? This type of insurance generally covers in-home & residential services over an extended period of time. This includes nursing home services. Secondary insurance is health care insurance that is purchased privately and is intended to cover expenses not paid for by Medicare. Secondary insurance policies do not usually cover Long-Term care costs or in-home care for an extended period.
  • If you are still mobile, and able to get around town, and don't require daily medical attention, then an assisted living facility may not be the best option for you. In-home care, or a personal assistant may be a better choice for you, and will save you the trouble of moving and adapting a new environment. checkbook, and also help teach you to budget and organize paperwork.
